What Hard Cutting Does to Crape Myrtles and Ornamental Trees

Drive through almost any neighborhood around here in late winter, and you will see crape myrtles cut back to thick, bare stumps. NC Cooperative Extension calls it crape murder. Cutting large stems back every year leaves swollen knuckles and pushes out thin shoots that droop under the weight of the flowers.

Other ornamentals suffer quieter versions of the same problem, like one-sided growth or a crown so dense it shades itself. Undoing years of bad cuts takes patience and a plan, not another round with the hedge shears.

Tree Shaping in Raleigh: What We Do and How

Tree shaping is pruning for form. It guides the size and outline of crape myrtles, flowering trees and other ornamentals, so they look deliberate and stay in proportion with the house and beds. It is related to tree pruning, which we do for health and structure, but it asks a different question: how does the tree look from the street, the porch and the kitchen window?

That is why every shaping job starts with a free consultation about the look you want and what the tree can realistically become.

  1. 01

    Crape Myrtles

We thin crowded and crossing stems from the center, remove suckers at the base and spent seed heads within reach, and cut back to well-placed side branches instead of chopping trunks to one height.

  2. 02

    Other Ornamental Trees

The same approach works on other small flowering and ornamental trees.

  3. 03

    What Shaping Is Not

Shaping does not mean shearing a tree into a ball or a box with hedge trimmers, which leaves a shell of leaves around a crowded, dying interior. It is not topping either. And it is not the art of growing living trees into chairs or sculptures, which shares the name online. Our shaping works with the tree's natural form, one cut at a time.

    Tools and Timing

Clippings are chipped or hauled away, and the beds and lawn are cleaned before we leave. You walk the yard with us and see each tree from the angles you care about, and w with how your trees look. Most yards need a follow-up visit in about two years to hold the shape. That visit is a much lighter job than correcting years of overgrowth, and it keeps the knuckles from coming back.

Why Raleigh Homeowners Trust Timberman With Tree Shaping

We Will Not Top Your Crape Myrtles

No flat-topped trunks and no knuckles. We cut back to side branches, the way NC Cooperative Extension recommends, so the tree keeps its natural branching and full summer blooms.

Shaped From the Angles You See

The crew checks each tree from the street and your windows as they work, because those are the views you live with every single day.

A Schedule, Not a Rescue

Shaping crape myrtles about every two years keeps them in proportion with light cuts. Once a tree is on that rhythm, it should never need a hard rescue job again.

Beds Left Better Than We Found Them

Shaping happens right above your flower beds. Clippings are gathered out of the mulch and plants, not blown into them, and the lawn is raked before we leave.

How Our Tree Shaping Works

01

Talk Through the Look

At a free consultation, we look at each tree from the street and the house, and you tell us what you want to change.

02

Plan and Best Timing

Your estimate arrives by text or email within 6 to 24 hours, listing the trees, the shaping approach and the right season.

03

Hand Shaping

The crew thins and reduces each tree by hand, removing suckers and seed heads, stepping back often to check its outline from the street and your windows.

04

Clean Beds, Then Payment

How Much Does Tree Shaping Cost in Raleigh?

Tree shaping is priced after a free consultation. The main variables are how many trees are on the list, their size, how overgrown or badly cut they are now, and whether any need a multi-year plan to recover from past topping. A crape myrtle shaped on a regular schedule is a lighter, quicker job than one left untouched for several years.

Removing a whole tree, or structural pruning on a large shade tree, is quoted separately. We do not accept payment until after you have verified our work and you are satisfied.
